Sourcing Methodology

Every specification on this site comes with three things: the value as the source states it, the source itself, and a verification status.

Source order

  1. Official manufacturer specification sheets.
  2. Official operator manuals, technical manuals and brochures.
  3. Official product archives and manufacturer documentation.
  4. Reputable industry publications and standards-based references.
  5. Dealer documentation.

Units

We display US customary units: pounds, horsepower, inches, feet, pounds-force, US gallons per minute and cubic yards. We keep the original value and unit next to our display unit. A conversion is shown only when it is exact. Approximate source values stay approximate: “about 20,000 lb” is not rewritten as a precise figure.

Definitions

A figure is only comparable when the definition matches. We do not mix operating weight with shipping weight, rated power with peak power, engine power with PTO power, rated operating capacity with tipping load, or heaped with struck bucket volume. Each specification on a page carries its definition.

Configuration and years

A value applies to the configuration and production period the source names. We do not carry a value from one model to a similar-sounding model without evidence.

Conflicts

When two sources disagree, the value is marked sources conflict and the difference is explained. We do not choose the more convenient figure.

What is recorded

For each value we keep the source title, publisher, page or table reference, the date we accessed the source, and the original wording.
