Karl Schlecht founded Putzmeister in 1958 to build plastering machines ("Putz" means plaster). The company moved into concrete pumping in the 1960s and became a global leader in truck-mounted boom pumps and stationary high-pressure pumps. Putzmeister pumps have pumped concrete to record heights on skyscrapers such as the Burj Khalifa.

In 2012 Putzmeister was acquired by the Chinese manufacturer SANY.
