Friedrich Wilhelm Schwing founded the company in Herne, in Germany's Ruhr region, in 1934. Schwing introduced its first concrete pump in the 1950s and, with Putzmeister, came to dominate the world market for truck-mounted boom pumps. The Stetter truck mixer brand also belongs to the group.

In 2012 Chinese manufacturer XCMG acquired a majority stake.
