In the 5–6 tonne class you can choose between true zero tail swing (e.g. Yanmar ViO57-6), compact/reduced radius (e.g. Cat 305 CR) and conventional tail machines.
- Zero tail swing: work against walls and in traffic lanes without watching the counterweight. Slightly less over-side lifting capacity.
- Conventional tail: more stable and often lifts more, but needs more space and attention.
If most of your work is in towns, gardens and beside roads, ZTS usually wins. For open sites with lots of lifting, a conventional tail may be better.
