How much should I knock off for a worn undercarriage on a used excavator?

When negotiating on a used crawler, the undercarriage is usually the biggest single item. A rough method:
- Get the undercarriage measured (many dealers do it for free or a small fee) to know the percentage worn for chains, rollers, idlers and sprockets.
- Get a current price for a full replacement from your dealer or an aftermarket supplier, including labour.
- Deduct roughly that percentage of the replacement cost from the price you would pay for the same machine with a new undercarriage.
Example: if a full undercarriage for a 20-tonne excavator costs about US$20,000 fitted and the measurement shows 70% worn, you are looking at a reasonable reduction of around US$14,000 compared with a machine with fresh tracks.
