Small and medium dozers are now mostly hydrostatic (e.g. John Deere 850L, Komatsu D51EX-24, Liebherr PR series), while many medium and large machines still use powershift transmissions (e.g. Komatsu D65EX-18). Caterpillar offers electric drive on the D6 XE.
Generally:
- Hydrostatic: smooth, precise speed control, full power turns and counter-rotation, ideal for finish grading.
- Powershift: very robust for heavy pushing and ripping, with lock-up torque converters improving efficiency.
Operators: which do you prefer for production dozing vs finish grading?
