Caterpillar D6
The most versatile medium dozer, now with electric drive
The Cat D6 has been the backbone of construction dozing for decades. The latest generation offers a choice of a powershift drive or the electric-drive D6 XE, plus factory grade control.
+Strengths
- Electric-drive D6 XE claims significantly lower fuel use
- Cat Grade and Assist features as factory options
- Huge dealer, parts and resale support
−Watch-outs
- Expensive, especially in XE form with technology
- Electric-drive complexity requires dealer expertise
Overview
Few machines are as recognisable as the Caterpillar D6. Introduced in 1935, it has been continuously updated through generations including the D6C, D6R and D6T. In 2021 Caterpillar replaced the D6T with a new D6, offered with a conventional powertrain or as the D6 XE, the world's first high-drive dozer with electric drive.
Electric drive
On the D6 XE, the diesel engine drives a generator that powers an electric motor connected to the tracks. Because the engine runs at its most efficient speed and there are fewer moving parts in the driveline, Cat claims meaningfully lower fuel consumption and longer drivetrain life than a mechanical drive. The drive also gives constant pushing power while turning.
Technology
The D6 can be ordered with Cat Grade with 3D, Slope Assist, Blade Load Monitor and Traction Control. Even entry-level options like Stable Blade, which smooths blade movements, help less experienced operators produce a better finish.
Who it suits
Earthmoving contractors, road builders and large landowners who need one machine that can rip, push, grade and finish. The D6 is often the largest dozer that is practical for general construction transport.
Alternatives
The Komatsu D65EX-18 is the closest competitor; the John Deere 850L is slightly smaller and hydrostatic.
