Overview

The Kubota KX040-4 sits at the top of Kubota's core mini excavator range and has become a staple of rental fleets and contractors around the world. At around 4 tonnes, it is big enough for house foundations, drainage runs and sewer connections, yet small enough to move with a large pickup and trailer in many markets.

Design and performance

Kubota builds the engine, the hydraulic pumps and much of the machine in-house, which contributes to its reputation for reliability. The minimal tail swing design keeps the counterweight close to the track width without sacrificing much stability. The hydraulic system is load-sensing, giving smooth combined movements, and the auxiliary circuits can be adjusted from the cab for different attachments.

Comfort

The cab is roomy for a mini, with good visibility, air conditioning in most markets and a digital display. Travel automatically shifts down when pushing, and the angle-blade option makes backfilling quicker.

Who it suits

Groundworkers, landscapers, utility contractors and rental companies who need one machine that can do most small to medium jobs reliably for many years.

Buying used

Kubota minis are easy to resell, so used prices stay high. Check track tension and sprocket wear, slew ring play, blade cylinder leaks and the condition of pins and bushings at the boom foot and bucket linkage.
