Bobcat S650
The skid steer most contractors have driven
The Bobcat S650 was the best-selling skid steer of the M-Series era. Vertical lift, 2,690 lb rated capacity and a huge attachment range made it the industry default.
+Strengths
- Proven, well-understood machine
- Excellent attachment compatibility
- Abundant used machines and parts
−Watch-outs
- Superseded by the R-Series S66
- Some units have DPF-related maintenance needs (Tier 4)
Overview
The Bobcat S650 was the most popular model in Bobcat's M-Series and is still one of the most common skid steers in rental fleets and on the used market. It was succeeded by the R-Series S66 in 2022, but thousands of S650s remain in service.
Design
Vertical lift arms give strong lift at full height, making the S650 ideal for loading trucks and handling pallets. The pressurised cab with a one-piece door kept dust out and was a major comfort upgrade over earlier Bobcats. Selectable joystick controls (SJC) were an option.
Buying used
Check hours, pivot pin and bushing wear, chain case oil condition, drive motor leaks, and service history for the DPF on Tier 4 machines.
