+Strengths

  • Proven design and huge parts availability

  • Strong resale, especially in Europe and India

−Watch-outs

  • Equal-wheel 4WS versions cost considerably more
  • Some versions have a smaller loader bucket than US rivals

Overview

Launched in 1980, the JCB 3CX became so dominant that in the UK and India "JCB" means "backhoe loader". Millions of JCB backhoes have been built, and the 3CX remains the core model.

Versions

The 3CX is offered with a side-shift backhoe (popular in Europe) or a centre-mount design (popular in North America and India), different engine outputs, two-wheel or four-wheel steer, and Eco or Pro specifications. Larger 4CX models have equal-sized wheels and all-wheel steer.

Strengths

JCB's DieselMax engine is built in-house; the Powershift transmission with torque lock and the LiveLink telematics system are standard on many versions. The loader end offers good breakout force and visibility, and the extending dipper gives impressive depth for the class.

Who it suits

Utilities, municipalities, plant hire companies and general builders who need one machine to dig, load and travel.
