- Autonomous-ready
−Watch-outs
- Electric drive maintenance requires specialist skills
Overview
The Komatsu 930E (originally designed by Haulpak) introduced AC electric drive to ultra-class trucks in the 1990s and has since been built in large numbers across several versions (930E-4, -4SE, -5).
Diesel-electric drive
A diesel engine drives an alternator; AC motors in the rear wheel hubs propel the truck and act as powerful retarders on descents. The drive is well suited to trolley assist systems.
Autonomy
Komatsu's FrontRunner autonomous haulage system runs many 930Es in mines in Australia, Chile and North America.
