Overview
The Caterpillar 797 series has been Cat's largest haul truck since the original 797 appeared in 1998. The 797F, introduced in 2009, carries about 363 tonnes (400 US tons) and is powered by a 20-cylinder Cat C175 engine.
Why mechanical drive?
Caterpillar argues that a mechanical powertrain transmits power more efficiently on steep, long ramps than diesel-electric drive. The 797F uses a seven-speed planetary powershift transmission and oil-cooled brakes.
Autonomy
Many 797Fs operate autonomously with Cat MineStar Command for hauling, especially in Australia and the Americas.
Who it suits
Large open-pit copper, iron ore, coal and oil-sands mines with haul fleets matched to 360–400-tonne shovels and loaders.
